NEW SOUTH WALES

There was an 18% decrease in the number of homicide victims in New South Wales, from 131 in 2013 to 107 in 2014.

In New South Wales during 2014:

  • Almost two-thirds of homicide victims were male (65% or 70 victims);
  • Almost two-thirds of homicide victims (65% or 70 victims) knew the offender;
  • Murder victims accounted for 70% (75 victims) of all homicide victims;
  • The most common location in which murder occurred was a residential location (67% or 50 victims); and
  • Of weapons used in murder, the most common was a firearm (45% or 22 victims) followed by a knife (39% or 19 victims).
There was a 0.9% increase in the number of sexual assault victims in New South Wales, from 8,121 in 2013 to a five year high of 8,192 in 2014.

In New South Wales during 2014:
  • Four in five victims of sexual assault were female (80% or 6,577 victims);
  • Almost two-thirds of all sexual assault victims were aged 19 years or under (64% or 5,240 victims);
  • The most common location in which sexual assault occurred was a residential location (71% or 5,776 victims); and
  • More than three in four victims of sexual assault (78% or 6,381 victims) knew the offender, with 2,674 victims identifying a family member.
There was an 18.5% decrease in the number of robbery victims in New South Wales, from 4,723 in 2013 to a four year low of 3,850 in 2014.

In New South Wales during 2014:
  • Robberies in a community location made up the largest proportion of total robberies (48% or 1,835 victims);
  • Males made up the majority of robbery victims (72% or 2,303 victims); and
  • In the majority of robberies no weapon was used (54% or 2,078 victims). In robberies where a weapon was used, a knife was the most common (59% or 1,048 victims.).
Unlawful entry with intent decreased 7.4% (or 3,673 victims) from 49,902 in 2013 to a five year low of 46,229 victims in 2014. Three-quarters of all unlawful entry with intent occurred at a residential location (75% or 34,675 victims).

Motor vehicle theft decreased 6.6% from 15,114 in 2013 to a five year low of 14,110 victims in 2014. Motor vehicle thefts were most common at community locations and residential locations with 44% (6,268 victims) and 43% (6,061 victims) respectively.
